Signs Of Climate Change

Posted Thursday 25th February 2010 at 20:07 by Francis Duggan
The weather is chilly yet with so little rain
And not one drop of water in the roadside drain
The hills overlooking the river are green
Yet signs of climate change not hard to be seen
The river is low for the time of year
And in the long range weather forecast of heavy rain we do not hear
In the depths of mid Winter five weeks from the Spring
To many a few days of heavy rain great joy would bring
No signs of heavy rain in the southern sky...

As Dead As The Dodo

Posted Thursday 25th February 2010 at 20:04 by Francis Duggan
As dead as the dodo you do hear some say
And those as dead as the dodo have lived their last night and day
The dodo were flightless pigeons in case you do not know
That lived in Mauritus a long time ago

Clubbed to death and eaten by sailors since they could not fly
The stupidity of human-kind dare we deny
And some species of wildlife are being hunted to extinction today
From mistakes of the past some never learn it does seem that way.

Only Nature Lives On

Posted Thursday 25th February 2010 at 20:01 by Francis Duggan
What the future has for us we are not to know
But our past seems to follow to where-ever we go
And to the father of time we eventually must bow

Tomorrow will come and yesterday's gone
And time doesn't wait for anyone it keeps ticking on
The promised hereafter may well be a lie
Nature is the only immortal all others must die
Of the wonders of Nature the poets may sing
But for the poet and the...

I May Live Far South

Posted Thursday 25th February 2010 at 19:58 by Francis Duggan
I may live far south of Hibernia's shore
And the road out of Millstreet that leads to Rathmore
But I can see the lark from the rank bracken rise
To sing o'er the hillside when I visualize.

Our thoughts unrestricted do have wings to fly
And take us to where we lived in years gone by
The great gift of memory a wonderful thing
To us times of joy and of sadness does bring.

But happy times serve as the best memories of all

A Nice Day By The Hopkins

Posted Wednesday 24th February 2010 at 20:13 by Francis Duggan
A nice day by the Hopkins River for the middle of July
On timber post midst the waterway the pied shag hang her wet wings out to dry
Where the coots in large flocks assemble in for them a good feeding place
For awkard looking little birds on land on water they move with grace
The male musk duck with an inflatible bag of skin under bill in the deep slow waters dive for prey
I've never seen these birds on land though them I do not see every day
By the famous...
