When I Am Long Gone

Posted Friday 30th October 2009 at 22:25 by Francis Duggan
When I am long gone and forgotten and of me not one memory
The magpie lark in the Town parkland all day long will sing out pee wee
And life it will go on as usual and the Seasons will come and go
And the creek born in the high country downland to the river will flow,
My better days are long behind me no turning back the hands of time
Just one more addictive old fellow addicted to old fashioned rhyme
Like most I too aspired to something and I too had my dreams...

Drought Conditions

Posted Friday 30th October 2009 at 22:20 by Francis Duggan
This countryside could do with weeks of rain
The dams near empty and bone dry every drain
Yet the six day forecast is for warm and dry
And the sun burns brightly in the clear blue sky.

Some farmers at their own hands they have died
Financial ruin did lead them to suicide
The robbing drought on their mental state did tell
And life for them became far worse than hell.

Only mid Spring and the landscape looking brown

The Return Of The Curlews

Posted Thursday 29th October 2009 at 21:49 by Francis Duggan
At Mcloughlins beach in the Spring of the year
The beautiful flute of the curlews one hear
The eastern curlews they sing as they fly
Their music echo through Gippsland's coastal sky
From the colder northlands they journey on down
Above coastal City and Village and Town
Above beaches and foreshores in September they reach
The mudflats on the foreshore of Mcloughlins beach,
In fancy I can hear them fluting today
Above the white mudflats...

The Brave Willy Wagtail

Posted Thursday 29th October 2009 at 21:46 by Francis Duggan
Nearby on a low branch of a wattle tree
A little black and white bird that I often see
In the early sunlight just after daybreak
his familiar song one could never mistake.

Of humankind willy wagtail is not shy
He shows little fear of me when I'm nearby
As he chases flies his tail wags to and fro
He is the small bird everyone seems to know.

For one of his size he puts on a brave show
He challenges the much bigger magpie...

The Redwings Bound For Mushera

Posted Thursday 29th October 2009 at 21:43 by Francis Duggan
Above the Towns and Villages across the moonlit sky
Towards the fields by Mushera mountain the migrating redwings fly
They leave their northern woodlands when the cold north winds blow
Before the onset of Winter and the first heavy fall of snow.

For the fields of Duhallow many of them are bound
And for some the fields of Aubane and Mushera will be their wintering ground
And for some 'twill be their last migration they will not return in the Spring...
