Nature's Anger

Posted Thursday 29th October 2009 at 21:40 by Francis Duggan
Great buildings before her have toppled like dynamos
She made them look as fragile as a castle of sand
Built on the beach by children in the morning
And washed out to sea when the tide floods the strand.

Anything humans do build cannot withstand her anger
The strongest of structures from their foundations she shake
Compared to her we are just tiny insects
There is nothing we can build that she cannot break.

We who are arrogant...

Only In fancy

Posted Thursday 29th October 2009 at 21:37 by Francis Duggan
Only in fancy I see Caherbarnagh
And climb up through the bracken to Gortavehy lake
And only in fancy I hear the robin singing
On the windswept hedgerow in the grey of daybreak.

And only in fancy I can see the jackdaws

Nature's Butterflies

Posted Wednesday 28th October 2009 at 21:49 by Francis Duggan
When they grow their wings and leave their pupa stage
Their time span seems brief and so quickly they age
Just a few days or less in the parkland to fly
And enjoy the freedom of the open sky,
I love them in their colours of red, spotted, white or brown
In Rural paddocks and gardens or parks of the Town
So lovely to look at in the Summer sunlight
Just seeing Nature's butterflies a thing of delight
So little time to mate and so quickly they die...

The Welcome Swallows

Posted Wednesday 28th October 2009 at 21:46 by Francis Duggan
The welcome swallows they were born to fly
To places near and far across the sky
They chase flying insects from dawn till gloam of day
And their borders stretch from here to far away
To shed rafters or house eaves their mud nests cling
And their breeding Season the Summer from the Spring
Dark with chestnut coloured throats tis an amazing sight
To see them twist and swerve when in full flight,
One cannot say of them that they are rare

A Thing Of Natural Beauty

Posted Wednesday 28th October 2009 at 21:43 by Francis Duggan
The beauty of Nature in the prime of the Spring
And the beautiful song that the goldfinches sing
You hear them once and you will know them again
Their twittering notes in your memory remain,
To sing about Nature is always a joy
I have been a fan of her since I was a boy
Though that is going back some five decades ago
And little of her ways I still seem to know
Were I born a poet of Nature I would write
The brightness of day and the darkness...
