This blog is intended to follow my progress this year in my pursuit of obtaining some worthwhile bird photographs.
Very much a beginner, with limited funds but almost unlimited time, I want to capture photographs that are more than mere record shots. I am not expecting many rare or even unusual species, but want to do justice to any bird that cares to pose for me.
Wish me luck and good light.

Lousy Weather for Photography

Posted Thursday 4th February 2010 at 17:29 by Denny Woodthorpe
I was hoping to do some photography today, but the weather wasn't suitable. Mist and rain. I suppose I could have persevered, but I would not have been pleased by the results, so I went shopping instead.
I have not seen the coal tit again that I first saw the other day, but as I haven't been watching much today, he (or she) could have been around for ages without me knowing.
I'm still pleased with my photographic "technique" and I can't wait for the weather to improve.
I bought a new background today. It is a small roller blind for a kitchen or bathroom window. I have daubed it with different paints (mostly greens) and will try it out as soon as possible. The great thing about using the blind is that it is portable. I simply need two telescopic poles (fishing bank sticks) and the blind. Together with the perch and a small feeder (both on fishing bank sticks) I am very mobile.
I hope to use it all at the local reserve, where I have permission to put up a feeder, as well as at the lakeside where I have a caravan throughout the summer.
I realise I am not getting a great variety of birds at the moment in the garden, but it is all a learning curve.
I like to think that I am serving my apprenticeship on Greenfinches before being let loose on anything more exotic.
The weather doesn't look very promising tomorrow, but as I have nothing else to do (except chores), I might put the camera out on the remote and watch the birds for a while from the comfort of the conservatory.
I've put just one photo up on the gallery. I realise that all my photos are looking quite similar, but putting the odd one or two up keeps me involved. The temptation is to take loads of photos and do nothing with them. I have a super one of a greenfinch in action, but I want to save that for a possible competition or publication.
I'm still enjoying it all though, which is the main thing.
