Time shifts light across the world, and mirrored clouds across the film of my eyes.
Aerial waders, distant, beyond count, sink to the marsh then lift like scattered shot before the leaden sky.
Beyond count. And I watch alone in this mouth of England, this table of ghost ships, and dykes, and telephone wires.
Silhouetted like a cripple, bent to the triangulation of sticks, I crook to my glass, and porthole the mire.
Knot, northern immigrants, grey shawled, pale, wing beaten...

Blue Rock Thrush - several (each year) on mountainside
Loads of yellow-legged Gulls foraging for crickets
Lesser Kestrel, Alpine Swifts Red-rumped Swallow.
Black-eared Wheatear, Sardinian Warbler, Subalpine Warbler each year
Cirl Bunting on farm
Great Grey Shrike and Peregrine on cliff top
Large population of Jackdaw and Hooded Crow
Suspected Wall Creeper up at Nidri Waterfall

I'm not a twitcher, I may have mentioned this occasionally, and I'd rather immerse myself in bird- life than spend my scarce free time travelling miles to tick off a bird. Plus, I'm crap at it and have a very low success rat.

So, I'm not a twitcher of birds. But is it possible to be a twitcher of birdwatching sites or places? I don't mean having a dream list of places to go and dealing with the crushing realisation, say, that with three kids I ain't ever going to the skyforests...

2000 Birders on a Boat

I was recently part of the Flock at Sea 2017 birding cruise, organized by Bird Life South Africa. The cruise saw nearly 2000 birders on board the MSC Sinfonia, as we departed from Cape Town harbour and made our way south into the open oceans. On board was sea birding expert Peter Harrison, acting as a guide along with several of our local experts.

After boarding fairly late in the afternoon of the Monday (24 April), we awoke the next morning where a large number of birders found themselves...
