The Last Heavy Rain

Posted Sunday 8th November 2009 at 22:44 by Francis Duggan
In the bare and dry paddocks the windblown dust is flying
And the juvenile magpies to their mother for food they are crying
The creek has stopped flowing the drain is bone dry
And the last heavy rain we had was in July
The last heavy rain we had five months ago
And in the parched paddock only thistles do grow
And thistledown blowing in the warm Summer breeze
And the cattle are standing in the shade of the trees
People praying for rain but no...

Today Is A Scorcher

Posted Sunday 8th November 2009 at 22:41 by Francis Duggan
Today is a scorcher some forty degrees
And heat in the sunshine and the warm breeze
The bullants are crawling on the sunbaked ground
And the paddocks so bare and so dry all around
On very warm weather the birds do not sing
And a warm start to Summer after a very dry Spring

A Monster Fire

Posted Sunday 8th November 2009 at 22:36 by Francis Duggan
A two hundred and fifty kilometres firefront is burning through Victoria East
Blackening the environment and dispossessing human, bird and beast
Clogging the sky with gray fog for hundreds of kilometres around
And only blackened desolation where it has been through to be found.

And for the people of Eastern Victoria the consequences are dire
It burns all before it mercy to none...

A Pleasant Day In December

Posted Saturday 7th November 2009 at 23:23 by Francis Duggan
A pleasant day in December of 25 degrees
And multicoloured butterflies flit around the flowering trees
And in the sunlit parkland the mudlark calls pee wee
And many in their beach wear in the city by the sea,
The warm face of Summer she wears her sunny smile
And the traffic buzzing to and fro along the beach golden mile
Summer in the coastal city a lovely time of year
And all along the city mall the buskers one can hear
So different from December...

The Goddess Of Nature

Posted Saturday 7th November 2009 at 23:19 by Francis Duggan
When all who live now to the Reaper have gone
The Goddess of Nature will be living on
Like the Seasons the generations of people they come and they go
But Nature's own Goddess of death will never know,
When I am not here in some future Spring
The pee wee in the old Town Parkland will sing
And where wild things do live and where wildflowers abound
The Goddess of nature she is to be found,
The stillness of death awaits you and I
But the...
