A small rant about introduced species

Well, I just read a thread here about why Bar-headed Geese aren't included in the British bird alert service. To me that would be obvious, since bar-headed Geese definitely aren't native. However, I must say I was kinda surprised that they include stuff like Mandarins. I understand that Mandarins have a self-sustaining population in Britain, but they're still not native...

Personally, I would not be the least bit interested in seeing a species that is introduced. The Egyptian Goose...

Buying bins

Posted Sunday 22nd February 2009 at 15:14 by Enji
For a long time I've been content with my mum's old binoculars. An old pair of Kowa 9x35, probably bought in the 70's or so. Nothing wrong with them, they still work perfectly, although the focusing wheel is hard to turn in the winter, and they're a bit dented and scruffed. Lovely old things.

But let's face it, they do make better stuff nowadays. So, a few days ago I went to Stockholm to try out a new pair. I definitely believe that you need to try binos for yourself, because the...

Twitching and I

I never considered myself a twitcher. I've always mostly laughed at people who go to look at some little bird that's managed to fly off-course and end up here. And now... we're only a month into the new year and I've already been on two twitches.

Granted, I would not have gone if not for the fact that both were pretty close by (about 60 km), and in very easily accessible locations.

The first one was, of course, the Yellow-browed Bunting that was spotted on January...

What you can find in the middle of the city

Posted Monday 19th January 2009 at 13:04 by Enji
Today I almost overslept, which would have been very bad since I had a driving lesson in the morning (I'm getting a driving license! Yay! Soon I can borrow mom's car when I go birding and can visit lots of new places! Wheee!) so I ran down to my bike and biked downtown. On my way I realised I'd gotten dressed so fast I did in fact have more time than I thought, so I decided to take a very small detour past the Uppland museum. It is situated in the middle of the city, by the river, and there's a...

The beginning of the year...

Posted Monday 19th January 2009 at 10:19 by Enji
Since I just started watching birds seriously last February, this is the first year I've actually written down everything I see from the start! I'm rather excited about this, and it will be fun next year to be able to compare notes and stuff. I've also finally gotten over my fear of posting my finds in the Swedish species database, Svalan. (http://www.artportalen.se/birds/todays.asp) At first I was a bit wary, thinking that everyone would look at my reports and maybe think that I was mistaken if...
