Bird news from Hungary, January (1 Viewer)

Back after a long vacation here are the recent bird news from Hungary.

Despite the cold and snowy weather of late December there are many geese staying in Hungary and among them nice flocks of Red-breasted Geese. 32 and 45 in a flock were reported from the south and 13 from the west of the country. There were singles of Lesser White-fronted Goose also reported. Wintering geese are a main feature of the Winter birding in Hungary tour along with other interesting birds observed at several wintering sites in January such as Wallcreeper and Alpine Accentor.

The wintering Greater Spotted Eagle was regularly observed at the Hortobagy. We have a good year for Short-eared Owls as there are many sightings from all around the country.

Wintering passerines in January included big flocks of Twite and Snow Bunting, along with smaller numbers of Redpolls and Waxwings.
