Bird news from Hungary, 3rd week of September

Posted Friday 19th September 2008 at 13:35 by ecotours
A cold front reached Hungary last Saturday and the most significant change it brought was the death of thousands of migrating swallows and martins due to lack of food and cold, rainy weather.

Much the same species were reported as last week with Dotterels seen at 2 other sites where this species is normally not found. A Broad-billed Sandpiper was staying at Lake Fertő along with a Pectoral Sandpiper. Knots and Sanderlings were the most frequently reported rare waders.

Some Pallid Harriers were noted this week too and Short-toed Eagles are still around. It is a good year for Long-legged Buzzard with a high count of 16 at one site.
