On days when weather is terrible or unstable, or when I get up late, I try to do something new. Sort of a "scouting" mission, or small project. Although it's disappointing that I'm not on a big all-day expedition, I often do quite well on the discovery scorecard anyhow. Today was one of those frustrating yet rewarding half-days. It rained all day, and when I finally got up to the Saddle I seriously wondered if I was going to get out at all. However, the rain was fitting weather...

Magpies Singing At Night

Posted Sunday 10th January 2010 at 00:08 by Francis Duggan
The white backed magpie singing in the stillness of the night
In the park his flute is echoing in the October moonlight
A marvellous feathered songster his notes melodious and clear
He always sings his finest in the Springtime of the year
One of a few Australian songbirds to sing under the night sky
During their breeding Season even at night around their borders they do fly
And with young in nest for to defend high on a branch of tree
They sing to...

The Flute Of The Aussie Magpie

Posted Tuesday 13th April 2010 at 23:33 by Francis Duggan
The flute of the Aussie Magpie so pleasant to hear
The bird that does sing every day of the year
His music once heard you can never get wrong
He really does have such a beautiful song
He sings on the ground and he sings on the trees
And his familiar music does float in the breeze
Across the Townpark in the sunlight of day
Of the silver billed bird of black and white to gray
To kill and eat little birds to him is not a crime
His ancestors...

By Mushera Mountain

Posted Monday 31st May 2010 at 02:14 by Francis Duggan
The winds of early Spring blew with a cold chill
Down the wooded slopes of old Mushera hill
Most days there damp and cold even too cold to snow
Where I cut down pine trees many Seasons ago.

Eoin Connors, Gene Buckley and Dan Joe Kelleher to me worked nearby
We were in wet weather gear the days were seldom dry
In a hard enough way for to earn one's pay
I wonder are they felling pine trees today?

From The Gougane Barra He Made Famous

Posted Saturday 5th June 2010 at 02:24 by Francis Duggan
From the Gougane Barra he made famous his bones lay far away
But the poems of J J Callanan alive and well today
Buried in distant Portugal the translator and poet
In Ireland's literary history remains as one of note
The poems of the great Bard of Cork have survived the test of time
Though he did not live to grow old he died in his life's prime
His name lives on in Ireland as a literary man of note
A renowned gaelic translator and a very famous poet...
