A year on the up

Posted Sunday 7th April 2013 at 20:20 by Green Sandpiper
Can't believe its been a month since I last posted, and looking back, its been a month of surprises and improvements. After a slow start to the year, with more lowpoints than highlights, March saw me regain some of the luck that had deserted me, and more importantly regain some of my appreciation of the simpler things.

Bird life should always be more important than bird lists, and I've been guilty of letting my slow start to the year affect my love and wonder of birds in general....

Wader ringing weekend Pt2: Canon netting.

Posted Friday 5th April 2013 at 20:49 by Rick and Elis
Our morning started at 03:00 hours when we awoke to get prepared for a 04:00 departure with Nigel Clark the softly spoken figurehead of the group, and some of the team. We arrived at the trapping area in the dark and started to walk along the pathway behind the sea wall hidden from the beach, there were six of us in total. Two people were left at the netting site and four off us moved on further up the beach, there was Nigel, Elis, me and Danni, who was given a walkie-talkie and instructed to continue...

Wader ringing weekend Pt1: Introduction

Posted Wednesday 3rd April 2013 at 23:43 by Rick and Elis
Our sincere thanks to the Wash Wader Ringing Group for their invite to join them on a weekend ringing on the shores of The Wash. It was a very cold weekend and an exhausting schedule, but I have to say that we have come away with an increased admiration for the dedication and indeed perseverance of these hardy people.
We all take for granted the plethora of data that is at our fingertips these days and seldom think about the hard work and sacrifice that may have gone into the gathering of...

My book is published at last!

Posted Tuesday 2nd April 2013 at 19:42 by Rick and Elis
Never mind 50 shades, forget about Harry Potter, a new best selling author (in waiting) has arrived... me!
Here's how it is described on the back cover, couldn't have put it better myself:

"Confessions of a Bird Guide is a witty, candid account of Rick Simpson's adventures in birding and a life that has taken him from England to Brazil and back again. Charting his journey from young boy in a makeshift hide, through the twitching years to becoming a bird guide in Brazil...

What I saw today

Posted Monday 1st April 2013 at 00:45 by snakybat
I thought I would keep it simple.

Went for a walk at Stannah country park this morning. Sat to watch the bird feeder and saw the following; Coal, Blue, Great and Long Tailed Tits, Chaffinch and Goldfinch, Dunnocks, Blackbird, Wood Pigeons, loads of Robins, a Reed Bunting and a Rat (which I had hoped was a Water Vole but I don't think it was).

This is my first blog so I apologise for the simplicity of it. Tired now, sleep....
