Killymarley. September.weclome And Unwelcome Returns

Posted Wednesday 30th September 2009 at 15:28 by Monahawk
September proved to be a much drier month with generally settled and mild weather throughout. There were few days of rainfall. This was a welcome respite from the wet July and August.
Swallows and House Martins were in abundance still but their numbers had dwindled by the final week.Autumn passage of Meadow Pipits continued and on the 27th 3 Skylarks flew over on their way perhaps to the coastal flatlands in the east.
Chiffchaffs remained all month with one bird singing locally as...

All In The Calm Of The Evening

Posted Wednesday 30th September 2009 at 01:41 by Francis Duggan
As darkness it is gathering above the ancient hill
The loud bray of a donkey cuts through the evening chill
And in the nearby paddock the spur winged plovers cry
All in the calm of the evening as darkness cloaks the sky,
The boobook and the barn owls from hiding venture out
And there is no mistaking the call of the frogmouth

A Winter's Day

Posted Wednesday 30th September 2009 at 01:37 by Francis Duggan
It has rained all through the night and for most of the day

The farmers with joy they will whistle and sing.

The floodwaters gurgling in the stormwater...

Of Rainfall And Wind

Posted Wednesday 30th September 2009 at 01:35 by Francis Duggan
The river bank high roars on it's way down
Under the bridge on the high road near the old country town
And the tall trees are soughing in the wind and the rain
The things I once knew I re-visit again,
The gurglings of the water in the roadside drain
And the calls of the jackdaws with me does remain
These memories I brought with me from far away
Of rainfall and wind on a wild Autumn day,
The stream from the old hill through my memory flow...

A June Morning In Ballydaly

Posted Wednesday 30th September 2009 at 01:31 by Francis Duggan
The river from the lake in Kippagh through Ballydaly winds it's way
And above the field crowded with rushes the lark carols at break of day
The young birds they chirp on the hedgerows at sun rise the sun looking red
It looks like good hay making weather a warm Summer's day is ahead.

The gray crow it caws on a beech tree in it's cloak of jet black and gray
And in her nest cloaked by the rank grass the hen pheasant on her eggs lay
It is such a beautiful...
