Ive lived in Lanarkshire all of my 40 years, and in that time I have seen my local area change beyond all recognition, and definitely not for the better. From the appearance of massive identikit housing estates where rolling fields once rang to the song of yellowhammers, the inexorable process of urbanisation goes on as the local authorities undertake a concerted effort to eradicate every sign of nature- or so it seems. The nature- filled halcyon days of my childhood are a swiftly receding memory, replaced by the creeping horror of what is replacing them. Its important, I think, to highlight what we, as nature lovers in general and bird lovers in particular, still have, for the moment at least.

Green Sandpiper's Mid- Year Report

Posted Monday 15th July 2013 at 18:11 by Green Sandpiper
Can't believe we're almost through July already, and as we're reachign the traditional quiet months for birding (moulting, skulking birds make it hard to find them- or at least, makes it more of an achievement) I thought I'd take stock of my year so far. That, and I'm off on holiday for a fortnight, so its as good a time as any.

I've deliberately set out to be more adventurous this year, visit new places, differetn habitats, different regions, with a view to seeing more and better...

Thrills And Chills On A Hill

Posted Tuesday 2nd July 2013 at 20:02 by Green Sandpiper
Mrs Green Sand has taken to 'encouraging' me to get more exercise/ lose weight/ reduce my rapidly expanding girth. When I say 'encourage' I really mean 'nag.'

Anyway, I've resisted her demands that I use the gym membership thats been sitting dormant for a year, pointing out that I'd rather get fit via fresh air rather than in some cholera- infested public gym. We're polar opposites on this issue, the UN would probably wash their hands.

On the odd occasion I can be...

Sometimes, Its Just Fun!

Posted Monday 24th June 2013 at 19:53 by Green Sandpiper
Haven't been out much recently, due to family commitments, but made the effort to get out and about this weekend just past. Starting on Friday evening, made it to CAthkin Marsh SWT reserve for about 8pm. The light was beginning to fail, despite being the longest day, but the twilight actually brought out the best n the reserve. In a place that well known for its solitude (well known solitude. Hmmm) the evening brought an almost tranquil atmosphere. As I walked around, I realised what it is...

More than birds

Posted Wednesday 12th June 2013 at 19:24 by Green Sandpiper
I've been told, on numerous occasions and usually by my wife, that there is more to life than birds. She probably has a point, maybe, but I'm unlikely to admit it. In any event, its a debate for another day.

The past week, though, has left me wondering if there is more to birding than just birds? I was fortunate enough to be a volunteer steward at my local RSPB reserve open day last saturday, which involved a lot of birdwatching but also a lot of mixing with the public, fammilies,...

The Luck of the Moment

Posted Sunday 2nd June 2013 at 21:23 by Green Sandpiper
I've been saying all week that I intended this weekend to go looking for spotted flycatcher and garden warbler. These were my targets, and I knew exactly (even to to the very tree) where I was going to look for them.

Speaking to someone a few days ago, though, made me question how realistic it was to plan anything or have any target bird. There are no guarntees in life, and birding is nothing if not lifelike. The difference between getting a bird and dipping on it can be a difference...
