February 20, 2014 Killdeer and Goose? (1 Viewer)

While in town, I saw a small group of killdeer near a parking lot across from our City Lake. Not too unusual, but I had never taken the time to look at its markings and identifying it.

I will need to spend some time identifying the water fowl at the City Lake because as I flipped though pictures in my field guide etc., I realized that I am not certain if I saw a goose or a swan. This is my main reason for birding right now. I realize that even though birds are around me all of the time, I have never taken the time to be sure of the species of even the most common birds around me. The bird was all white and an all orange beak, I thought. As I look through photos, I am unsure if there was any black on the beak. It takes a good eye and a decent memory for birding. Neither of which do I possess at this time, but hopeful that it develops as I continue my new hobby.

I am certain we will see herons while fishing this year at the river since we normally do, but this year, I will actually take time to identify them. We see all kinds of birds at the river every year, but I could not begin to tell you what they are. I hope that all changes this year.
