I didn't have much time on Sunday, so I went to the Army Road area of Pu'u Maka'ala NAR to locate an 'aiea tree that I had taken photos of several months ago. In fact, I found three of them, including one that was quite large. I'm not sure which is the one I got the photo from. An interesting thing I observed is that the trees with more branches had much smaller leaves. None were flowering, but there were some buds on one that I'll have to watch in case it's fruiting.
I also checked the 'aku colonies and found 4 new 'aku sprouting outside of the protected area! The 'aku in the enclosure are steadily growing, and look wonderful. I got my first photo of a clermontia peleana, which was once so rare it was believed to possibly be extinct. They're planting it in various enclosures around the island now. I'm anxious to eventually get some flower photos.
I found a really nasty weed-infested pit of pig hell between the 'aku unit and Pu'u Maka'ala. I was cutting weeds until that point, but this area was so infested there was no point in trying.
The weather was wonderfully cool and overcast with sprinkles. 'Apapane were nearly absent. Japanese White-Eye were perhaps a bit less numerous than usual, but still outnumbered all other birds combined. Northern Cardinal, Hwamei, 'Elepaio and 'oma'o were at relatively normal numbers.
