sadly, it is still happening......... (2 Viewers)

A pensioner in derbyshire who kept over 100 birds in sub-standard conditions escaped jail after admitting a string of animal welfare offences.
the man pleaded guilty to 34 offences after a rspca investigation caught him in possession of
61 live wild birds, he told the rspca he had been
a bird fancier for over 40 years, had wild birds
such as a redstart, marsh tits, hawfinches, skylarks, nuthatches, whitethroats, wheatears,
and a blackcap. A number of parrots, includeing African greys and yellow crowned Amazons, were discovered in his attic in dirty cages with no water. the magistrates court handed him a 4 month prison sentence suspended for two years. the chair of the bench told him these were very serious offences the offences happened between july and september 2011,
when he was found to have traps for takeing wild birds. he also tampered with bird rings.
the rspca said drop- traps were found at his allotment near his home and he was also in
possession of two yellowhammers, a chaffinch,
bramblings,bullfinches, siskins, mealy redpolls,
lesser redpolls, goldfinches, and two greenfinches. the grandfather also admitted a lack of care and causeing unnecessary suffering
owning the traps, and various tools, a net and
associated items for the takeing of wild birds
he was also ordered by the court to pay £1,800
costs, disqualified from keeping any avian species for 10 years, and will be electronically
tagged to comply with a curfew order for 4 months .
subsequently 3 more warrants were executed in
this part of derbyshire over this period.

to know this is still happening is sad indeed
these people who have "SO CALLED" interests
in birds certainly have no interests in the welfare and safety of these birds so they can
never be classed as bird lovers i just hope that
this practice is dieing out now with the older generations and not being passed to the younger ones i suppose like everything else
time will answer to that.
