Juggling birds & college

Posted Wednesday 16th February 2011 at 15:16 by 93Birder
Oh the days that I could ring my grandad miss a day of school and go to one of my favourite reserves and spend the day birding... It saddens me that I can no longer do that.

I can safely say I will never ever stop birding and if anything I hope to do more when im older than I am doing now. However in recent times I have been going less and less, grandads getting old, I'm getting more work and birding is being pushed to the back. I know it sounds silly and I should focus on my studies, but birding is my escape route from the hard graft that is my college life now that I can do that I am slowly going crazy!

Slight off topic near the end there... My question is how can I enjoy birding as much as I do as well as getting on with my college work?

Thanks Jake

I can remember in my teens my cousin who is 7 years older than me [it seemed more than that in those days] telling me that you may not realise it now but the best time you have is your school days [almost everything is done for you, food is put on the table for you, money is just a handout from parents and relatives] when you get older you have to take care of eveything and wonder if you have enough money to pay the bills etc... Thinking back how right he was.

Just think of your college work as something that is a necessary thing that will take up a couple of years, but is well and truly worth it for a better future, but you can still go birding...In fact you will probably get more birding done now than when you finish and get a job.

Wait till you are working, then you live for the weekends and holidays If you are really keen you will find ways to go birding and work. Or you can make Birding your work. i.e. Become a bird guide for a tour company or start your own. Or a photographer. There is plenty people do that the Simon Kings, Bill Oddies of this world. Try and get a degree or qualification that you can use in Birding. Photography/Computing etc. Whatever you do just enjoy your birding.
