The forecast predicted dry skies for the first time in weeks, and I hoped to get up early and explore a new area on Powerline Road. When I woke up at 4:55AM I thought "super, I'll be there at dawn!" I rolled over...and it was 6:25AM. "Oh FSCK!"

It was indeed clear on the Saddle, though heavy vog was starting to drift in from the South. The breezy shifting winds and swirling cloudlets overhead reassured me that nothing convective would be happening today....

The week's storms were mostly gone by Saturday morning, but there was a lingering wetness and potential for unstable weather. I headed to 'Ola'a since I haven't visited the southern end of Pu'u Maka'ala NAR in a few weeks. It was overcast and cool. About noon there was some instability in the air and a brief drizzle that kept me from continuing from redwood corner up to Na Lua Mahoe. Instead, for the first time I returned all the way down the Na Lua Mahoe unit and 'Ola'a tract fencelines back...

4/20/09 - Haleakala N.P. and Olinda rare bird breeding facility

Posted Tuesday 21st April 2009 at 10:48 by bkrownd
Monday was our second and last day on Maui. We exhausted our interest in Hosmer's Grove quickly yesterday, and had no access to Waikamoi today. We got up early and went to the summit of East Maui, Haleakala. For one thing, we were interested to see the shape of the summit and upper elevations, to get an idea of what the upper elevation habitats are like, where/when petrels can be heard at night, and what the access to the upper edges of the native forests is like. Also, I was interested in seeing...

4/19/09 - TNC Waikamoi Preserve, East Maui

We were given a tour of the public trail in the Nature Conservancy's and Haleakala Ranch's Waikamoi preserve on the North slope of East Maui. The weather was absolutely perfect.

The "Hosmer's Grove" area was a bit of a shock. The trail was extremely short. There has been little/no attempt to replace the alien trees with native species. There were plenty of the common native birds, though, and it was odd to see native birds in alien trees that they usually ignore on...
