A Long Way From Here

Posted Wednesday 20th January 2010 at 19:46 by Francis Duggan
A long way from here to the old Paps of Shrone
And from Gortavehy and his face of stone
And a long way from here ten thousand miles or more
From the fields and the cliffs of Hibernia's shore.

A long way from here to where the rivers do meet
In the fields of Duhallow near the Town of Millstreet
And a long way from Cullen and Knocknagree,
Rathmore, Boherbue, Kiskeam and Derrinagree.

A long way from here to where the Blackwater...

Common Bronzewings

Posted Wednesday 20th January 2010 at 19:43 by Francis Duggan
In this shrubby place where small mountain trees abound
The bronzewing pigeon coos on the higher ground
A prolonged coo a soft humming sort of sound
Shy birds whose nests are never easily found
Brown birds with bronzish wings one hear but seldom see
They build their nest of sticks on bush or smaller tree
In quiet place from predators hidden away
Two pale white eggs the female bronzewing lay
Common bronzewings of humans are quite shy

The Past May Be Gone

Posted Wednesday 20th January 2010 at 19:39 by Francis Duggan
In three decades of years many minutes of time
And back in the late seventies I was past my prime
Back there in the place of the gray hooded crow
Where the river Finnow to the Blackwater flow.

And plainly I have seen a far better day
And clearly my better days in life are gone
But only the lust for life keeps me keeping on.

It has been awhile since I heard the robin sing...

A White Butterfly

Posted Wednesday 20th January 2010 at 19:34 by Francis Duggan
Just a few days to mate lay her eggs and then die
A minute to her an hour to you and I
She flits through the parkland in the sunlit sky
With brown spots on her fragile wings a white butterfly
unlike a bird she does not have a song to sing
Yet the wonders of Nature are an amazing thing
A beautiful flying insect in the warm lamp of day
In a few days at the most with Nature she wil lay
In only a day she will have reached her life's prime

The First Of December

Posted Tuesday 19th January 2010 at 19:53 by Francis Duggan
To Australia in the Southern Pacific Summer has made her way
The first of December a beautiful day
Song birds sing and whistle on the sunlit trees
And the sweet scent of hay wafts in the warm breeze
The air full of the buzzings of flies and of bees
On a temperature high of twenty seven degrees
The swallows above the sunlit paddock chirp as they fly
And for food the young magpies to their parents cry
The creek flowing at a trickle and the water...
