The Merri

Posted Monday 18th January 2010 at 21:24 by Francis Duggan
On the Warrnambool-Koroit countryside a flat landscape as old as time
The waterway known as the Merri that inspired song, story and rhyme
Babbles on it's way to the Pacific every night, day and evening and morn
It has been flowing for thousands of centuries before the first human was born
Long before 'twas given the name of the Merri the old river babbled along
And long before the age of the dinosaur and the first songbird sung it's first song
The old river...

Old Rupert

Posted Monday 18th January 2010 at 21:20 by Francis Duggan
She has had him since he was a pup some thirteen years or so
And between Genevieve and her border collie the bond of friendship grow
In his prime in the late nineties going back ten years ago
Old Rupert not the dog he was the years have left him slow
A beautiful black and white dog his muzzle has turned to gray
But he still digs for rabbits when he gets the chance his natural dog way
He comes home to Genevieve with an earthy coat and earth around his face...

Songbirds

Posted Monday 18th January 2010 at 21:15 by Francis Duggan
In Spring and Summer they welcome the dawn at daybreak

On shed rafters, bushes and trees and even on the ground
Yet some species of local songbirds are becoming rare
And extinction is rife in the big World out there
The carolling lark in the clear morning sky...

On Koalas Fighting

Posted Monday 18th January 2010 at 21:11 by Francis Duggan
Out there in the front yard in the dead of the night
The koalas they grunt and they snarl as they fight
Quite cuddly to look at in the light of day
But their territorial disputes far rougher than play
With them there is far more than mere pride at stake
They keep me awake with the racket they make
Dispossession for a male koala is a tragedy
They live in danger without a territory
They snarl and grunt as they do fight it out
Wrestle and...

Where The Cails Waters Flow

Posted Sunday 17th January 2010 at 19:52 by Francis Duggan
On a naked beech tree the gray hooded crow
Is cawing in the dawn where the Cails waters flow
The morning is cold quite cold enough to snow
And from Caherbarnagh the wintery winds blow

As yesterdays flood subside in the gray of a November dawn
The salmon are swimming upriver to spawn
From the distant Atlantic they have swam all of the way
In the river's gravelly bed their eggs they will lay.

The cattle in farm-yard are bellowing...
