On Birds

Posted Friday 1st January 2010 at 20:24 by Francis Duggan
The more I learn of birds the more my wonder of them grow
And I come to realize how little about them I do know
And though I recognize many by their chirp or their song
On bird recognition I've often been wrong
You could live for five hundred years and study birds every day
But if you are honest with yourself I am sure you would say
That I know a lot about birds but not everything
Though I've studied their breeding habits for many a Spring,

The Neighbour's Rooster

Posted Friday 1st January 2010 at 20:21 by Francis Duggan
In the neighbour's fowl shed in his backyard in the darkness his rooster does crow
In the very small hours of the morning one might say his cockhood on show
For hours on end he keeps on crowing with him I find it so hard to sleep
But just to stay friends with my neighbour my silence on the matter I keep

Back In Rotorua

Posted Thursday 31st December 2009 at 22:41 by Francis Duggan
The memories of what was with him remain
And in fancy he is in the past again
By the thermal springs watching the steam bubbles rise
The depths of his love of home only he can realize.

Since he was last in Rotorua five years have ticked on by
On looking back time it does seem to fly
The smell of the sulphur in the morning air
His thoughts are of home though he lives far from there.

Old Rotorua to his heart is ever near

But daydreams it does seem do seldom come true
And in life we receive what we are only due
I daydreamed that I would be someone of note
A literary icon a very famed poet
I was young then and of greatness the young do daydream
But reality is different to daydream World 'twould seem
The small birds chirped and sung on the hedgerow
And the stream...

The Last Week Of Winter

Posted Thursday 31st December 2009 at 22:33 by Francis Duggan
The flute like notes of the grey shrike thrush so pleasant to hear
He must know the first day of Spring it is near
For the last week of Winter this is a nice day
The Goddess of Spring less than a week away
From this Southern Land of the Pacific sea
Where the magpie pipes on the spotted gum tree
And the familiar black and white mud nest builder one often does see
The magpie lark known to many as the pee wee
Because of the sounds of the notes...
