On Hearing Spotted Neck Doves

Posted Wednesday 2nd December 2009 at 22:27 by Francis Duggan
The cooings of the spotted neck doves comes from the trees nearby
A bird of gardens and parklands and of humans not that shy
Easy to recognize by song or voice and in their range never rare
Mostly seen in parks in City or in Country Towns though not seen everywhere
They build a flimsy nest of sticks on lower branch of tree
Lay two pale eggs and from the ground their nest not hard to see
Familiar in their dark spotted necks and mostly brown to gray

Such A Warm Day For April

Posted Wednesday 2nd December 2009 at 22:23 by Francis Duggan
It is such a warm day for April 30 degrees or two or three more
The magpie larks sing in the parkland by the sunlit southern shore
The silver gulls wait by the picnic tables for scraps the picknickers to them do throw
And they squabble and squawk rather loudly as their greed and excitement does grow.

The weather for the time of year warm and humid the day does not have any...

House Sparrows

Posted Wednesday 2nd December 2009 at 22:19 by Francis Duggan
They chirp all year round to nightfall from daybreak
The voices of the house sparrows one should never mistake

A straggly ball of hay lined with small feathers serves them for a nest,
On shed rafters or under house eaves or in bush or small tree
Around human dwellings birds one often does see
But they...

Brown And Rugged Clara Mountain

Posted Tuesday 1st December 2009 at 22:56 by Francis Duggan
Brown and rugged Clara Mountain forever looking down
On Duhallow and Sliabh Luachra and the fields of Millstreet and Millstreet Town
From the het that grew between the bracken when the lark sang in the sky
We eat the blue ripened whortleberries on warm evenings in July.

Brown and rugged Clara Mountain can be seen from far and wide
Like a silent sentinel overlooking the green old countryside
An old Duhallow landmark that Duhallow people know

Drought Conditions

Posted Tuesday 1st December 2009 at 22:51 by Francis Duggan
There is scarce enough of grass here for to feed a hare
And the landscape has never been so dry and bare
And bone dry the creek and bone dry every drain
And the farmers are weary from crying out for rain
Just a hollow of dried mud where there once was a lake
And there's more than financial bankruptcy for many people at stake
For water birds, freshwater fish and amphibians it has been a very bad year
They need rivers, dams and ponds for to live in...
