On Hearing A Magpie At Dawn

Posted Thursday 26th November 2009 at 22:12 by Francis Duggan
March in the Southern Fall seems a long way from the Spring
But this morning at dawn I heard the magpie sing
His kind are known to sing all through the year
And their flute like notes always pleasant to hear
Their music once heard you never can get wrong
In rain, wind and sunshine they burst into song
Whilst some birds only sing in the thunder and rain
The wonders of Nature are hard to explain
But the magpies of Australia sing all the year...

On Mt Rouse

Posted Thursday 26th November 2009 at 22:09 by Francis Duggan
The drought has left the stony paddocks looking bare and brown
The Countryside around Mt Rouse and Penshurst rural Town
The thistles are growing plentiful where stones and rocks abound
And signs of Mt Rouse's volcanic eruptions are everywhere around.

This is a very old land 'twas old in the Dreamtime
A Land that has inspired stories and inspired the poets to rhyme
In the Countryside around Mt Rouse dinosaurs once ranged free
It is a very old...

The Boobook Owl Calls

Posted Thursday 26th November 2009 at 22:05 by Francis Duggan
On the parkland trees in the pale moonlight
The boobook owl calls in the calm of the night
The little birds wake from their sleep and they hear
The voice that to them is the echo of fear,
A bird that stays hidden from the light of day
He searches the trees at night for smaller prey
A flycatcher, a silvereye or thornbill would be nice to eat
The little brown owl is a lover of meat,
The call of the boobook one cannot mistake
He calls in...

The Rose

Posted Wednesday 25th November 2009 at 22:38 by Francis Duggan
The rose she has gone back to Nature
Her petals on the grass by her mother tree lay
But memories of her blooming in the sunshine
With me till my own end will stay.

The most beautiful rose in the garden
And the pride of her mother tree
Far redder than a ripe red tomato
A thing of great beauty to see.

Next year the rose tree will have more roses
And one rose amongst them will stand out
The fairest rose in the sunlit...

In A Hundred Years

Posted Wednesday 25th November 2009 at 22:34 by Francis Duggan
In a hundred years from now to me it will not matter
Since I'll be part of Nature's earth and clay
And life without me will go on as usual
And the birds will sing at the dawning of the day.

Yes life goes on forever and forever
Though due to climate change humans may be more rare
And Mother Earth will look healthy and vibrant
And in the Spring wildflowers will be blooming everywhere.

In a hundred years from now it will not matter...
