The Pied Stilt

Posted Sunday 22nd November 2009 at 23:01 by Francis Duggan
It is not a barking puppy that you hear
By the lake shore in the shallows very near
To where you stand it is the black and white bird over there
The long legged one the pied stilts are not rare
In the bird World they are strangers to fame
And pied stilts for them does seem an apt name
Their stilt like legs by Nature ready made
In the lake shallows all day long they wade
They search for water plants and tiny water life to eat
Such things...

Climate Change

Posted Sunday 22nd November 2009 at 22:55 by Francis Duggan
The Worldwide human population has more than quadrupled since I was a boy
And these decades of affluence we well may enjoy
Yet due to pollution of land and of water and air
Signs of climate change are now seen everywhere

On Hearing A Grey Shrike Thrush

Posted Sunday 22nd November 2009 at 22:47 by Francis Duggan
In the gloam of the evening as darkness cloaks the sky

He is the famed grey shrike thrush he has a lovely song
Once heard you cannot mistake him you can never get him wrong
They are such marvellous songsters amongst Australia's best
On ground or stump or low bush they build a cup shaped nest
Of rootlets, leaves and fibres three to four white brown spotted eggs they lay
Grey birds I am familiar with...

From Listening To Nature

Posted Saturday 21st November 2009 at 23:31 by Francis Duggan
From listening to Nature great insights we gain
The crickets are singing to tell us of rain
The sky clouded over at gloam of the day
And from us rain cannot be too far away
Nature from us many of her secrets do hide
And to look into her soul great scientists have tried
But of her best kept secrets they never will know
Our wonder of Nature it only does grow
Her billions of insects that crawl, hop and fly
Her many species of animals and...

Common Bronzewing

Posted Saturday 21st November 2009 at 23:27 by Francis Duggan
The common bronzewing pigeon has a mournful coo
It sounds like a very soft repeated boo
Though far from endangered not seen everywhere
In parts of the countryside they are quite rare
They live in quiet places shy birds without fame
Not common to look at but common in name
They roost on the trees but they feed on the ground
And when they fly their wings give out a low whirring sound
In small flocks or in pairs they are to be found
And...
