A Day In Late November

Posted Friday 6th November 2009 at 22:39 by Francis Duggan
Amongst the dense foliage him I cannot see
The goldfinch who sings on the sunlit gum tree
And house sparrows the birds who do not have a song
They chirp in the hedge as they do all day long.

A day in late November a near to perfect day
And in the blue sky there's not one cloud of gray
And the white butterflies seem to dance in the breeze
As they flit around the flowering shrubs and the blossoming trees.

The balmy air full of...

On A Blackbird Singing

Posted Friday 6th November 2009 at 22:35 by Francis Duggan
All through the Spring I hear him at daybreak
His voice is a voice one can never mistake
The song of the blackbird is a song that I know
It always takes me to the decades ago
When I was much younger a long way from here
The blackbird he piped in the Spring of the year
In the grove by my old home he piped loud and clear

Posted Friday 6th November 2009 at 22:32 by Francis Duggan
Farewell to the poets and poetesses of Nature
Their beautiful rhymes are a gift of the heart
In literature they will always be remembered
For their promotion of Nature in which they played a huge part.

In their verses they captured some of the beauty of the Natural World
And their legacy in words is still with us today
In their poems one can visualize the wild birds singing
And in the warm Summer breeze get the sweet scent of hay.

The grey shrike thrush he pipes a lovely song
Once heard he's one you never can get wrong
His whistle sounds melodious and clear
His beautiful voice is a joyful thing to hear.

Near wooded places they are to be found
And they nest on tree or stump, building or even on the ground
And in her cup shaped nest of bark and coarse grass lined with fine rootlets the female lay
Three to four pale eggs with brown spots through the gray.

Emus

Posted Thursday 5th November 2009 at 08:28 by Francis Duggan
Their tiny wings so weak and useless condemn them to life on the ground
The National birds of Australia in large flocks are not to be found
Yet not seen as an endangered species emus are not seen everywhere
And in parts of their range which seems a worry the big birds are becoming rare
The female emu is not a devoted parent she leaves the hard work to her mate
He raises the chicks all on his own and the eggs on his own incubate
He is such a wonderful father...
