Where The Cails Waters Flow

Posted Thursday 5th November 2009 at 09:25 by Francis Duggan
On the bed of the river pools where the green river weed grow
The otters chase trout where the Cails waters flow
Through Annagloor, Shannaknock, Liscreagh and further down
Where it joins the Finnow west of old Millstreet Town.

From the lake by Kippagh mountain it begins as a rill
And through the gorse and the bracken it babbles downhill
Down through Ballydaly it journeys along
With it's silver tongue and it's babbling song.

The Wannon In Drought

Posted Thursday 5th November 2009 at 09:21 by Francis Duggan
The Wannon river has never been so low
Through the bare and dry paddocks at a trickle it does flow
The aged farmer says I've never known it so dry
And the sun every day burning in the blue sky.

The bullants are crawling across the sunbaked ground
And the bushflies in their millions are buzzing around
The farm dams almost empty and bone dry every drain

Crows

Posted Thursday 5th November 2009 at 09:18 by Francis Duggan

They are good at surviving in their own crow like way
They hide food from their neighbour crows to serve them in times of need
Few species of crow endangered for they...

November In Duhallow

Posted Wednesday 4th November 2009 at 06:46 by Francis Duggan
Up the old Finnow river in the gray of the dawn
Against the strong currents the salmon swim up to spawn
The overnight frost leave the fields looking gray
In Duhallow in November at the breaking of day.

The cold winds of late Fall have left the hedgerows looking bare
And the grayness of your breath floats in the chilly air
And at least four long months till the first signs of the Spring
When the wildering flowers bloom and the nesting birds...

A Goldfinch Is Singing

Posted Wednesday 4th November 2009 at 06:42 by Francis Duggan
The beauty of Nature the joys of the Spring
In that scrubby place where the goldfinches sing
Their songs of November on the sapling trees
That sway to and fro in the freshening breeze
The wildborn goldfinches lovely to behold
With red around their bills and fawn, dark brown and gold
Their twittering low notes like fairy bells ring
The wonders of Nature a magical thing
With brown spots on their fragile wings white butterflies
So effortlessly...
