Nikon SB800 flash (1 Viewer)

Hi
Using the Nikon SB800 flashgun with 500mm f4 lens, I simply cannot figure out how to set it to do what I want and I have certainly read the handbook. I am trying to get shots of small birds, warblers, in the undergrowth in this appalling light we are having in the UK lately.
I am using a Nikon 500mm f4 VR lens with SB800 on an extended arm to avoid ‘red eye’ and using cable SC17 between Nikon D3 camera and flash. The only programme it will work on reliably is of course “Programme” but I want to be able to choose the aperture and shutter speed, e.g. I would like to use 250th at f8 at least, f 16 if possible (I do have a better beamer flash extender if necessary). When I try and use e.g. aperture priority and set it for f8, if I set shutter speed to e.g. 250th (under exposed now on the meter of course)the camera sees this as under exposed and that’s exactly what I get, underexposed pics and the flash has no affect. I have even gone through every obvious setting on the SB800 and I still can’t get it sorted. The SB800 has no problems with the distances I am working, even in 'programme' I am having to reduce flash output by 2/3rd of a stop. So, dim overcast day, bird in foliage within 30/40ft, want to use flash as main light at 250th f8 at variable distances.

Kind regards Colin Smale. A.R.P.S. (Just in case you think I must be a rank beginner, I feel it.)

You must understand how flash works. As you stop down the lens with a smaller aperture, flash becomes less and less effective. It will reach shorter distances to every f/stop you add.

The aperture you are trying to use, f/8 or even f/16, are quite limited for flash use. Unless your subject is very close, flash light just won't reach there, so you will get an under exposed photo. To adjust this you only have two options (if you don't want to use a longer shutter speed).

1) Use a larger aperture, say f/6.3, f/5.6, and so on...

2) Use a higher ISO. The higher the ISO, the further away the flash light will reach.

You can and should also use a Better Beamer Flash Extender all the time with long lenses. That alone will pretty much double the distance a flash will reach.

Shutter speed, as long as you are below the max sync-speed (I believe 1/250 at the D3), will have absolutely no effect in flash exposure. It will only affect the amount of ambient light in the photo.

Also make sure you are at the correct setting on the SB-800, that would be TTL.

Hi Colin,
When in aperture mode, set the SB800 to TTL BL, (fill mode) set the exposure to -1 & 2/3, range to 50m, use the "flash extender".
