11/20/08 - Sax-Zim Bog (1 Viewer)

Since my goal in Minnesota is winter/boreal species I went up to the Sax-Zim Bog area, Northwest of Duluth. Weather was a bit poor for photos, with wind and snow. After my first few photos after dawn I had to retreat to the car with aching fingers, but I got my first redpolls in the bag! Those would prove to be my only new bird of the day - hundreds of redpolls frolicked in the conifers all day long. The afternoon weather was ok between snow flurries, but I left as the daylight started failing around 2PM.

Today was otherwise mostly an orientation, as I toured the area. Other things I saw were bald eagles, some hawks, a northern shrike, a pileated woodpecker and lots of ravens waiting for roadkill. I did not see any of the large packs of feral dogs I've been warned about.
