A trip to Heligoland and a Pomarine Skua at home (1 Viewer)

Last week I spent some days on Heligoland with some other birders. It was great! The day we arrived we found a Little Bunting within minutes, the first of at least three! The night brought a big fall of thrushes. In the morning the island was packed with Redwings, Song Thrushes, Blackbirds and some Ring Ouzels. A trip to the Düne, a small sandy island nearby produced some waders and a nice Lapland Bunting. In the afternoon we heard of a Pallas' Warbler and went to the spot. Soon we had excellent views of this tiny bird. Just twenty minutes later we found our own Yellow-browed Warbler.
The next day was as good as the others. A juvenile Rose-coloured Starling and two Short-eared Owls were the highlights.
The ferry back to Cuxhaven was the only peaceful moment: no birds at all. I hoped for some Skuas, but nothing...
Back home in Switzerland I got one. Since more than a week a juvenile Pomarine Skua is on the Lake of Sempach. Beautiful (although a bit distant) views of the bird today, after waiting one and a half hour for the fog to lift.
Good october so far...:t:

Hi winterthur, I was interested in your pom skua record because I saw an unmistakeable adult complete with tail feather ball over a village in Czech republic in july!!! Could not believe my eyes but I have seen several in scotland and elsewhere and cannot see what other bird it could be mistaken for ? (I had great view in good conditions) They are seen around UK coasts in every month of the year. I think they are almost never seen in the czech rep. Do you think there is a regular shortcut across the middle of europe for a few of these birds? There are loads of huge lakes and north to south river valley systems in my area (strakonice, susice) and indeed throughout a lot of Cz. Rep. but very few possible observers. Be grateful for any thoughts. den
