Trieste Museum of Natural History is about to move from its current location in Piazza Hortis (where it's been since its inception in 1860) to new premises, starting on 10th December - so I don't know how many more times I'll be able to update this blog before losing access to the collections for some time - who knows how long?



...or whether I'll still have to share my "office" with a Sawfish snout?

a tropical flycatcher-type labelled 'Singapore'



Sultan Tit (Melanochlora sultanea)

some sort of oven- or ant-bird from labelled 'Brasile 1883' and about the size of dipper:...

Ciao a tutti, belli e brutti!

Saturday morning and miserable cold wet weather so I decided to spend a fascinating Saturday morning in the warmth of the museum working on a couple of very interesting trays I'd brought up from the stores late on Friday afternoon.

Some great finds amidst the dross including an adult White-winged Cliff-chat (Thamnolaea semirufa)

When you're dealing with a snapshot of the avifauna of the nineteenth century you're sure to get to observe some drastic changes when compared with the present day. ... what's missed is mystery.

Absolutely horrible, miserable day in Trieste. Cold, driving rain with snow up in the Karst above the city. Yuck. Not a lot of news on the living bird front, though there is a Pink-footed Goose (Anser brachyrhynchus) with the Greylag Geese (A. anser). Sixth record for Italy (if accepted).

Didn't make a lot of progress today. Lots of odd weaver birds and no really good book to help me sort them out. I may put away all the Ploceidae until...
