Of Nature's First Lessons

Posted Friday 16th April 2010 at 22:33 by Francis Duggan
I've heard the blue tits young chirp in the hollow log
And I've heard the curlew pipe o'er Shannaknock bog
And the bluebells, snowdrops and primroses I've seen
In Spring blooming on the ditch of the pebbly bohreen.

The black and white magpie in the gray dawn of the day
Chatters in the grove by the hill far away
Where I learned my first lessons from Nature many decades ago
In the place of the rook, the jackdaw and gray crow.

His Dog Is His Best Friend

Posted Friday 16th April 2010 at 22:27 by Francis Duggan
She loves and lives with another now his former wife
But his dog remains with him his true friend for life
And for as long as she lives his dog with him will stay
Just for a few pats and a feed every day.

Since dogs are ever faithful for that is their way
He knows that his dog him would never betray
When he comes home from work him she's happy to see
Your dog's love for you a true love would you not agree?

Of cruelty to animals...

The Mushera Fog

Posted Friday 16th April 2010 at 22:24 by Francis Duggan
It steals down the mountain the Mushera fog
Across the mountain road and cloaks Togher Bog
On damp and wet days in Winter and the latter Fall
The traffic goes up and down road at a crawl
From the high road a steep drop down the mountain side
And to drive fast there in the fog is a wish for suicide
But what a beautiful drive on a pleasant Spring day
When the hawthorns are in their white flowers of the May
A beautiful view of the countryside...

The Bouts Of Nostalgia

Posted Friday 16th April 2010 at 22:20 by Francis Duggan
Some of the east coast of Australia I've travelled up and down
Since I left Claraghatlea a mile from Millstreet Town
In distant Duhallow a half of a World away
From where I am living and growing old today
Where the Cails and Finnow the old rivers meet
In the rushy fields near the Town of Millstreet
And into a huge flowing mass of water does grow
As into the Blackwater at Drishane it does flow
In my flights of fancy in the wind and the rain...

Memories Of Gneeves

Posted Thursday 15th April 2010 at 22:18 by Francis Duggan
The blackbird by the bare hedgerow scratch for slugs under the dead leaves
By the narrow bog road that leads up to Gneeves
And the cold winds of February with a Wintery chill
Blow up the high fields and across the bog hill
But I do recall Gneeves bogland in Spring
When the little brown lark o'er the bracken did sing
A musical speck in the gray morning sky
Till he sang out of sight as in the clouds he did fly
The shlaun men shlauned the soggy...
