On the way up to the summit Monday morning I noticed that more of the Saddle 'ohi'a are starting to bloom. At Halepohaku there was quite a bit of activity among the flowering mamane at the treeline. I was able to take a few minutes to walk away from the dorm complex to do a point count in the mamane and came away with approximately 8 'apapane, 15 'amakihi, 3 Japanese white-eye and 3 house finch. The nearby trees were quite loud with 'apapane, so I had to make a bit of a guesstimate. The 'apapane...

9/27/09 - Pu'u Maka'ala NAR, Army Road

Posted Tuesday 29th September 2009 at 02:07 by bkrownd
On a very rainy Sunday afternoon I went up to the mauka leg of Army Road in Pu'u Maka'ala NAR. With only a half-day to work with I figured I would continue my recent project of mapping the population of 'anini trees, and look for interesting plants in areas I haven't explored yet. The native wet forest is quite tangled and hairy here, so despite a large pig population there are pockets where interesting plants could potentially live.

It was raining fairly hard when I arrived,...

9/26/09 - TNC Honomalino & HVNP Kipuka Puaulu

On Saturday we had another volunteer planting day at the Nature Conservancy preserve in Honomalino. We planted 70 endangered pritchardia schattaueri "loulu" palms, endemic to South Kona. We were on the lower fenceline of the preserve, whereas we usually plant in the upper 2/3 of the preserve, which gave me a rare opportunity to get some bird counts in in the lower elevations. It was fairly hot after a sunny morning, so it was quiet. Average point counts were roughly 3 'apapane, 3 'amakihi,...

9/24/09 - Upper Waiakea Forest Reserve, Diagonal Northeast Trail

Posted Friday 25th September 2009 at 06:44 by bkrownd
Of course they day I decide to point people to my Waikamoi trip photos PBASE collapses for the first time. Hrm.

I was operating on about 5-6 hours of sleep a night for the last three weeks due to everything connected with the bird survey on Maui. Today was my first full day off since returning, and since I was unable to get up early I decided to sleep in. I got a late start, arriving at the start of the forest road at noon. My mission was to go back to the location of some possible...

9/23/09 - Halepohaku

Posted Wednesday 23rd September 2009 at 23:43 by bkrownd
Flowers are appearing on the manane trees at Halepohaku again, and I heard a number of 'apapane there on the way up the mountain this morning.

I have been working hard on getting my Maui/Waikamoi trip photos up, but there are still many to process and add. Most of the plants are going into my usual plant galleries, but I did make a special gallery for the Maui/Waikamoi trip: http://www.pbase.com/bkrownd/maui_wilderness
