I returned to the same area North of Saddle Road, across from Kaumana Trail. I wasn't particularly early so I just started to explore upslope West of the hunting trails. I got to about 400 meters southwest of the main trail. The pig disturbance was variable depending on the terrain, and the understory wasn't as intact as the trail area. I found scattered 'anini trees and a couple 'ohe mauka trees. More amauropelta ferns. A large population of cyrtandra lysiosepala. Some huge 'oha wai trees...

Today I continued exploring the forests North of the 19 mile mark of Saddle Road. Another late start, but I made a lot of progress today. The weather was overcast and sprinkles around morning to noon, followed by a partly cloudy and dry afternoon. Yellow fronted canaries greeted me at the parking area again. They really love that spot.

I motored up the trail this time intent to get to the end of Thursday's exploration. (only 500 meters in) I noticed and waypointed a few...

Today I continued my initial exploration of the forests North of Saddle Road, across from the lower end of (the official) Kaumana Trail near the 19 mile marker. It has been horribly hot and humid this week which has made me feel extremely exhausted and sore, so I didn't get into the forest until noon. I'm slowly penetrating into this new area, having covered a good fraction of the first two kipukas in two previous outings. (kipuka 1 bad, kipuka 2 excellent) I've never explored the main forest...

8/5-8/9/09 - TNC Kona Hema Preserve

I was very fortunate to be invited to spent a 4-day weekend helping with a reforestation project at The Nature Conservancy's Kona Hema preserve in Honomalino. I got to play botanist, ornithologist, natural historian, navigator, etc, and gave the researchers a tour of our native ferns. (to the best of my knowledge) I had a wonderful time doing vegetation surveys in the reforestation plots with interesting people. They called it "work", but for me it was 100% fun! :)

8/1-8/2/09 - Upper Waiakea Forest Reserve, North of Kaumana Trail

I was watching new DVDs until late last night, and it rained into the morning which always makes it hard for me to get out of bed, so I got a very late start today. When this happens I usually go to somewhere I haven't been before to scout new areas. Disappointing at first, but sometimes it works out for the better. Today was one of those happy accidents.

My Saddle explorations along and South of Kaumana Trail are far from complete, but by now I need a whole day just to get...
