This blog is intended to follow my progress this year in my pursuit of obtaining some worthwhile bird photographs.
Very much a beginner, with limited funds but almost unlimited time, I want to capture photographs that are more than mere record shots. I am not expecting many rare or even unusual species, but want to do justice to any bird that cares to pose for me.
Wish me luck and good light.

Numbers going mad!

Posted Sunday 9th January 2011 at 17:34 by Denny Woodthorpe
The numbers of birds visiting the garden is continuing to rise. Considering the size of the garden (30m x 20m) and the fact that it is a bit hemmed in by a fence and a lyllandi hedge, I am very pleased with how many birds I am getting.
Yesterday I counted no fewer than 18 Blackbirds at the same time! I only need 6 more for a pie! Add that to 13 Jackdaws, 12 woodpigeons and about 30 Starlings, it is a wonder the smaller birds get a look in.

My photography method is working a...

Getting There

Posted Wednesday 29th December 2010 at 19:24 by Denny Woodthorpe
Well, I feel I'm making good progress with my new set-up.
The 60D is sending a signal to the Sigma flash, and by a little experimentation, I have got good exposure.

Two problems now. The first is the fact that my remote release has stopped working. I've changed the batteries and even opened it up to see if any wires have become unattached, but to no avail. I've had to bite the bullet and order a new remote. I'm back to using the long cable release for a few days.
The...

It works!

Posted Sunday 19th December 2010 at 18:53 by Denny Woodthorpe
Well, I've tried the new camera out on the birds, and I'm very happy with the results, with one reservation, which I will come to later.
I really do see a difference in the quality of the image compared with the 300D,as you would expect. 18meg as apposed to 6meg certainly leaves more room for cropping.
I've been using it today in the garden, mounted on a tripod and operated by a remote from indoors.
Worked a treat.
I then tried it with my Sigma EF 430 Super DG flash used...

My New Camera Has Arrived.

Posted Friday 17th December 2010 at 18:52 by Denny Woodthorpe
Wow.
At last I have my new camera - a Canon 60D.
There have been a lot of posts about the 60D being inferior to the 7D. Obviously so, as the 7D costs 300 more. However, the differences do not seem all that important for me. A stronger body? I have "misused" my plastic 300D for 5 years and it has never let me down and the 60D seems MUCH stronger.
The other main difference in favour of the 7D is the faster frame rate. So what? Even photographing birds in flight, I am...

More firsts for the garden.

Posted Monday 13th December 2010 at 16:05 by Denny Woodthorpe
The weather has been a little milder today (Monday) and, suprisingly, it has meant more birds in the garden. Nearly all the snow has gone and I would have thought that the birds would have been out in the countryside, but, no, they are all in my small back garden.
Two new visitors are a Stock Dove and a female Reed Bunting (identified by this terrific site).
Add these to the bramblings (3), pied wagtails (2) and all the other finches and usual visitors, have made the garden a very...
