11/16/08 - Pu'u Maka'ala NAR (1 Viewer)

I got a very late start Sunday, still feeling pooped out. I decided to go to the upper side of Army Road, where I might get some more varied bird counts compared to the lower elevation sites I've been hunting for rare plants in recently. I counted the length of upper Army Road, and then went to check some koli'i that are growing off the end of the road. Fortunately, both were safe, but neither flowered this year - probably next year. I found a survey transect, transect 9, and followed it about 250 meters South through the high canopy forest. I renewed some of the old flagging. This trail might become central to my later explorations of Pu'u Maka'ala NAR.

'Apapane were very numerous, though the 'ohi'a aren't flowering yet. The oddities of the day were a small flock of juvenile nutmeg mannikins and a single hwamei. (though small numbers of hwamei aren't at all unusual in this specific area)
