A Memory

Posted Tuesday 29th December 2009 at 19:45 by Francis Duggan
In a Finnow river pool from here far away
I recall watching dark otters as they fished for prey
In the clear sunlit deep waters they splashed and swam about
As they chased their quick quarry the elusive brown trout
On the river bank amongst the rank rushes I lay ahide
And watched as through the water they effortlessly did glide.
A pair of adult otters their hunt they did enjoy
Quite unaware of their watcher a young country boy
In the quiet...

I Come From The Place

Posted Tuesday 29th December 2009 at 19:41 by Francis Duggan
I come from the place of the great grey backed crow
Far north of this Land where Finnow waters flow
Under the bridge by Millstreet Town on the road to Rathmore
On to the Blackwater to the Atlantic shore
In my flights of fancy I watch the lark fly
Up from a clump of rushes to carol in the sky

He Won't Be Going Back

Posted Monday 28th December 2009 at 19:50 by Francis Duggan
He won't be going back to the town by the sea

His grand daughter in her twenties has a daughter of three
Though few of his age does look as fit as he
An ageing migrant the years have...

When I visualize

Posted Monday 28th December 2009 at 19:46 by Francis Duggan
The stream from the high ground it babbles it's way
Through Claramore and Claraghatlea morning, noon, night and day
On to the bigger rivers to the ocean shore
It has flowed forever and will forever more.

In fancy the dark brown white breasted dipper I hear
Amidst the babbling rapids his music ring clear
And blackbird and robin and finches and thrush
Sing in grove and on hedgerow and on tree and on bush.

When I visualize I'm...

The Gariwerd Ranges

Posted Monday 28th December 2009 at 19:42 by Francis Duggan
The stony hills of the Gariwerd in time very old
To the passing traveller rugged to behold
Where the indigenous tribes had their Corroborees in the Dreamtime
Mountains the subject of art and of story and rhyme
To the old stony hills where scrub and small trees grow
The Seasons they come and the Seasons they go
From Dunkeld to Halls Gap 65 kilometres a forty five minutes drive by car
For a range of mountains that does seem quite far
And from...
