Isabelline & North Cave (1 Viewer)

Had a good look at the Isabelline Shrike yesterday in glorious sun at Buckton mid-afternoon. The bird showed beautifully, energetically catching flies and bees whilst i was there. It was a very concolorous bird with a Buff back and pale underside. It also had a very distinct mask compared to pictures of other juvs i have seen. Phoenocuroides?

Dropped in at North Cave this morning. Only waders were 3 ruff but i still tried to string the small one as a Pec Sand. Good numbers of Pochard building up plus a few Wigeon and millions of Little Grebes whinying away.

Hello there.

The brownish-grey upperparts, the rufous crown is clearly shown and together with whitish underparts including flanks and area under the eye is clearly indicative of phoenicuroides. Also a nice view of the emarginated p 3-5 as opposed to Red-backed who has only 3-4 p emarginated.

Cheers Jan- very informative (as usual!!). That emargination is very obvious. Was talking to a few birders on site to get consensus feel and we all seemed swayed by the features you mention.
