Birding diary 2019.
1st January: New Year ‘bird race’
In 2018 I had tried to see as many species as possible. I was doing well until a rather unrewarding (in terms of new species) week in Norfolk in October. The timing of my holidays is very much work-governed and clearly I had left it too late.

Dr. Rob Tovey

Posted Monday 22nd October 2018 at 16:42 by brackenb
It is with great sadness I have recently heard of the passing of Rob Tovey recently of Mauritania, Oman and Saudi Arabia. Rob was an avid birder of all of these countries and contributed much to the birding records of each of these much under reported lands. He was a good friend and mentor and will be greatly missed.

The other day, I was leaving for my daily walk when I glanced over to the field next to my house. I see something big and brown... ah, it's probably a morning dove, I think. Only wait... look at that BEAK! That's a woodpecker beak if I ever saw one! I zoom
