Black Kites. Spring newcomer in the Pond of Soto de las Juntas. Rivas. Madrid.

Upon arrival at Pond of Soto de las Juntas I saw flying over the cliffs a black kite. This bird spends the winter in sub-Saharan Africa and they come to Europe to breed in Spring.
The first ones arrived in late February to the Iberian peninsula but most of them come in April. They will stay until July or August when they will go to wintering to Africa.
On this date they are mating. Couples chase each other. Circling in their persecution they plummeted....

But of course you'd expect us to point out that WMBD is not just about cuckoos, doves, quails swallows, warblers wheatears and the like, although these birds are significant and important, it is also about waders of many kinds. We will be thinking especially about some of them out there on lengthy migrations to their breeding grounds far to the north. Like the Little Curlews we have been following on their way from Australia to China and Russia and the Red Knots battling from Patagonia to the Arctic....

Spring has sprung. Many waterfowl and wading birds are going to breed to northern Europe but are compensated by a multitude of birds that breed here but spend the winter in Africa. I have seem bee-eaters, hoopoes, and nightingales last week.

Upon I parked the car at the observatory Laguna de Barillos at km 11 of the ZA-715 carrtera I saw a couple of skylarks.
Barillos Pond was completely dry therefore I went to Paneras Pond. Three dozen mallards flew toward it. They landed in the pond. I could also see some teals. Before I arrived I had seem some birds. They proved to be lapwings. In fact they were 66 lapwings.
Among ducks and teals there was two small wader in the background, Perhaps...
