7/12/09 - Upper Waiakea Forest Reserve, Road R

Again, a rainy morning and a fairly wet afternoon. I only went out for a half day in the best native forest off of Road R. I searched a very small bit of forest I'd never been in before, but knew would be rich in rare plants. I found numerous bits of the phyllostegia floribunda colony in this area, and also a fairly large maua tree. I spent about half the time following another hunter trail hacked a bit heavy-handedly through the pristine understory, which fortunately didn't hit any of the rare...

Saturday was a volunteer day at the Nature Conservancy's Honomalino preserve. The weather was pretty good for a volunteer day - a bit too sunny at first, but pleasantly misty in the afternoon. Elevation about 4200-4800 feet. Our task for the day was to clear the pasture grass and root mass out of scattered meter-square areas for native forest restoration test plantings. This was in the same area as last summer's extensive forest restoration plantings.

The plums planted along...

7/09/09 - Upper Waiakea Forest Reserve, Diagonal Northeast Trail

Posted Sunday 19th July 2009 at 06:34 by bkrownd
Very busy recently with holidays and volunteer activities, so I'm behind on posting my outings.

July continues to be very wet, and my outings have suffered. Thursday 7/9 was another wet morning, and I only got a half day. I went to the diagonal northeast trail across the road from Pu'u Maka'ala Army Road. After going down the trail just a little I headed directly into the forest to the northwest, into an area which is partially acacia plantation and partially native wet forest....

7/2-7/5/09 - Upper Waiakea Forest Reserve, Roads R & S

I spent the 4-day holiday weekend expanding my exploration of the high quality native forests around Roads R and "S" along Stainback Highway. After finding numerous rare plants off of Road R in the last couple of weeks my attention is focussed on this area, and continued rainy weather would keep me off the Saddle, anyway. The rains were occasionally heavy for about an hour around noon, but on most days the afternoons were pretty dry.

7/2 - I took the trail I've called...

6/27-28/09 - Upper Waiakea Forest Reserve, Road R

Posted Wednesday 1st July 2009 at 18:25 by bkrownd
This weekend's weather was wonderful. After finding the new large cyanea tritomantha last weekend I continued searching the ash substrate area off the end of Road R for rare plants. It was very productive. I found one more cyanea tritomantha two more unfenced clumps of endangered cyanea platyphylla. Hopefully those can get fenced soon. Numerous phyllostegia. I found a neleau tree, adding to the unusual tree diversity in this area. I eliminated many weeds such as himalayan raspberry, clidemia...
