4/13/08 - Upper Waiakea Forest Reserve

Posted Friday 18th April 2008 at 19:10 by bkrownd
I was lazy in the morning, and only went out for a short while in the afternoon. I explored around the South side of Road R a bit, and then went up the North side to check some of my favorite plants. There was a japanese bush warbler down near Road Q, which is unusual in this particular area. I also found a lone touchardia. I pulled a few small ginger infestations along the way, and ripped up a few banana poka vines.

4/12/08 - Honomalino

Posted Monday 14th April 2008 at 04:24 by bkrownd
Volunteer day at the TNC's Honomalino preserve in South Kona district. We planted assorted common native understory plants in the old ranch pastures where there is presently little more than grass under the recovering forest. (still a fairly open canopy at this point) This was about 4500 feet elevation. TNC needs to get a supply of some more of the rare plants that the State plants in the neighboring state forest reserves.

Birdwise, we were among some of the highest concentrations...

4/9/08 - Kapapala Ranch

Posted Thursday 10th April 2008 at 03:02 by bkrownd
I went to catch the helicopter for the forest bird survey at dawn this morning, only to find out that we're postponed a couple of weeks due to a flash flood watch.

I got a really nice new $$$$$ Marmot helium +15 down sleeping bag for the trip, but oddly it arrived smelling strongly of wet dog! Yech - I gotta try to wash it before the rescheduled survey date. Unfortunately our nasty tropical humidity makes it difficult to air stuff like this out.

4/3/08 - Powerline Road

Back out on Powerline road for the first time in nearly 3 months! The weather was cooperative. We saw/heard 2 'akepa and 2 Hawai'i creeper in about 4-5 hours in the usual kipuka 3 miles out. We tried to locate 'akiapola'au in kipukas along the way back and in the first 2 miles of Pu'u O'o Trail, with some wandering through the kipuka 'ainahou forests, but no luck. Japanese white-eye were very scarce. (yay!) There has been a light-phase 'io gliding low over the tree tops on each of my last...

4/2/08 - Pu'u Huluhulu

The kolea are all suited up in their breeding plumage, ready to fly off to Alaska for the summer.

I checked the native plantings at Pu'u Huluhulu. Some are gone, some are browsed, but a few are doing quite well. Several 'akoko are looking like little trees already. Schiedea, 'anunu and stenogyne angustifolia are sprawling around. Oddly, the sandalwoods are looking a bit stressed. I need to go back in better light to look for others.
