8/27/09 - Upper Waiakea Forest Reserve, Diagonal Northeast Trail

I felt like hell this morning for no apparent reason. The forecast was fairly rainy, so I wasn't expecting to do any big adventure, but it was actually fairly dry all day. I went up Stainback to the diagonal northeast trail to monitor hunting and pig disturbance, check my rare plants, and explore another new area. Got going at 10:30AM. Got back to the car at 7PM under the sunset and moonlight.

After checking some of the rare plants that the hunters recently hacked their nasty...

8/26/09 - Hawai'i Politics Threatens Native Species (Yet Again)

Posted Wednesday 26th August 2009 at 20:20 by bkrownd

In a major blow to conservation on Hawai'i I read that the Hawai'i County Council recently voted to ban the use of biocontrols to combat the spread of strawberry guava, which is second only to pigs in the destruction of native ecosystems. Various self-serving anti-conservation groups including a mishmash of groups led by some loony new-age types have opposed control of strawberry guava and have waged a loud and outrageous campaign of lies and fearmongering against the biocontrol project. (even...

8/23/09 - All Over The Saddle

Posted Monday 24th August 2009 at 20:52 by bkrownd
Updated Tuesday 25th August 2009 at 18:42 by bkrownd
I gave a tour of the Saddle on Sunday, mostly to visit rare or interesting plants and good habitats on Powerline Road and in the kipukas around Kaumana Trail. The weather was fog and rain all day long, yet somehow I still got a bad sunburn!

Since we were motoring around to get from place to place, and the weather was very wet, we paid little attention to birds. In the 1881 lava flow kipukas we didn't hear or encounter any of the endangered birds until we got to the lower end...

8/22/09 - Powerline Road and Forest North of Saddle Road, 20 Mile Area

The forecast misled me today. It looked like a dry forecast, and I thought that I was going to FINALLY get to attempt to cross the 1984 lava to the big forest beyond. I was excited! Unfortunately the low chance of precipitation actually meant fog and blowing mist instead of dry. It doesn't count as precipitation in the forecast if you're actually inside the cloud. :/ Well, it did get me up nice and early - I started down Powerline Road just after 6AM dawn. I also learned that for the real...

8/20/09 - North of Saddle Road, 19 Mile Area

I continued exploring the area North of Saddle Road, in the Kaumana Trail area. I was fortunate that the originally forecast rain failed to appear, though the poor forecast prompted me to sleep in an extra few hours.

I started at the 'aiea tree on the main trail, and searched the area between the two big trails. Unfortunately I didn't find any other 'aiea or any other new plants for the area. The area between the trails alternated between mostly undisturbed areas that are too...
