10/1-2/09 - Halepohaku, Mauna Kea (1 Viewer)

Still plenty of 'apapane at Halepohaku, with one or two singing out of sight inside each tree. Breezy today, which is keeping the birds from showing themselves as much as earlier in the week.

Lots of 'ohi'a bloom high on the Saddle. If the weather ever clears up I'll be trying to get out on Powerline Road ASAP.

Friday was blowing misty, and the birds loved it. A few more were visible flying from tree to tree. Still no red-billed leiothrix at HP this week, and I think the morning activity noise around the facilities scared off the quail. I estimated the point count at 10 'apapane, 12 'amakihi, 3 house finch, 2 Japanese white-eye, 3 Erckel's francolin. The 'apapane number got a bit of a bump from a few that chose to switch trees while I was out there.
