On Friday I finally did an expedition to 'Ola'a Trench, just South of Pu'u Maka'ala NAR, with a local entomologist. The weather was perfect, with non-threatening puffs of cloud in the morning, a brief late afternoon shower, and a mostly cloudy sunset. The air was very still in the morning, so it was a very sweaty trek. The breeze finally picked up with the afternoon showers, which helped us to locate scattered loulu palms rustling in the wind.

We went via Pu'u Maka'ala Army...

6/4/09 - Upper Waiakea Forest Reserve, Opuhe Trail

I got up moderately early Thursday morning. The forecast predicted cloudy and widespread rain, which the night/morning weather seemed to confirm, but it was partly cloudy and quite dry all day on the Saddle. Expecting rain, I went back to the Opuhe Trail yet again to search more of the forest South of Kaumana Trail for rare plants. Alas, if I had known how dry and stable the weather would be I could have done a major Saddle kipuka expedition!

The day was not without satisfying...

5/31/09 - Upper Waiakea Forest Reserve

Posted Wednesday 3rd June 2009 at 19:53 by bkrownd
On Sunday I was completely pooped out from Saturday's long sweaty work day. I slept in and didn't arrive at Kaumana Trail until about noon. The weather was unexpectedly good, with no hint of storm, and I was a bit disappointed that I had not been able to get out to the Saddle kipukas with such weather.

I went out on the Opuhe Trail. The first thing I did was attempt to locate more of the airplane wreckage, which also served to scout an area I had not explored yet. The area...

5/30/09 - Keauhou Ranch, Kilauea Forest Reserve

On Saturday I helped census outplantings of endangered clermontia pelena and cyanea stictophylla at Keauhou Ranch, near Kulani Cone on windward Mauna Loa. The plantings are along the mauka cross fence in the ungrazed native forest (the "Kilauea Forest" Reserve), and has been fenced and pig free for about 10 years. (referred to as an "IBP" area of keauhou ranch from studies in the 1970's) This is moderately wet old high canopy forest, with a decent understory and some koa,...

5/28/09 - Upper Waiakea Forest Reserve, South of Kaumana Trail

I continued my exporation of the forests at about 5000 feet elevation on the eastern Saddle, South of "Kaumana Trail". After 9 hours of exploring and searching I felt as if I was only just getting started, but my arch-nemesis the Sun abandoned me.

The weather was clear in the morning, becoming partly cloudy mid-day, and overcast but dry in the afternoon. The air was humid and still, so it was a sweaty day.

I started out in a slightly different place,...
