4/5/09 - Oh Glorious Powerline Road!

Posted Monday 6th April 2009 at 11:30 by bkrownd
This morning I was torn between going to the wet forest and returning to Powerline Road. I was a little worn out from yesterday's long march around the lava fields, and wanted a change of scenery and activity. Looking out the window, the clouds were few and thin. However, the forecast was wet. I knew the wet forest would be really muddy, and that I should take advantage of the dry morning weather for at least a few hours and start out on Powerline Road. In fact, the few morning clouds were...

4/4/09 - Powerline Road

I went out on Powerline Road with visitors this morning, and got a glorious 6AM start. I wasn't stopping for bird counts or plant photos, so we were in the big kipuka by 7:15AM, which is amazing. The clouds broke up briefly at dawn, and various degrees of pleasantly cool cloudiness came and went throughout the day. It doesn't get much nicer out there, and made a wonderful change from the extremely wet recent weather. Every bog and puddle on the Saddle was full to overflowing from the recent...

3/30/09-4/1/09 - Kona Forest Bird Survey

Posted Thursday 2nd April 2009 at 07:22 by bkrownd

I just returned from the bird survey in the Kona unit of Hakalau Forest NWR. It was a very enlightening experience in many ways. I got to talk at length with a number of biologists, some of which have extensive experience here, and learned a lot. I was flagging and trail cutting, since this forest is still a bit beyond my bird counting skills in terms of distance estimation and keeping track of the dozens of birds ('apapane) at each station. It was sweaty muddy work, and we stepped in hundreds...

3/28/09 - Pu'u Maka'ala NAR, Army Road Unit

Posted Monday 30th March 2009 at 01:14 by bkrownd
The pervasive rain lessened somewhat on Saturday. I have developed a bad habit of sleeping in, so I didn't get out in the morning like I could have. Instead I went to Army Road in Pu'u Maka'ala NAR. I was on my way just before noon, and the weather was actually very pleasant for an outing - cool and mostly overcast, with only occasional sprinkles.

My plan for the day was a few bird counts, a bit of distance estimation practice, some weeding and weed monitoring, fenceline monitoring,...

3/26/09 - Kipuka Puaulu

Posted Friday 27th March 2009 at 08:13 by bkrownd
The pervasive wetness continues. I don't even bother trying to get up early in the morning anymore because the rain is in command morning, noon and night. I didn't have the energy for the leeward side of Mauna Kea, and I wanted to practice my distance estimation more than slog the hot dusty road up the mountain. However, I made what proved to be the wrong choice. I tried to go the leeward side of Kilauea instead, to kipuka puaulu which is usually a dry spot, but unfortunately it was raining...
