10/15/09 - Saddle Dreams

The weather forecast looks good for a visit to Powerline Road tomorrow morning. That made me check on my cumulative eBird data for Powerline Road and I was surprised to see some interesting gaps in there. I don't get out to Powerline Road much in the rainy season (Feb-March & Oct-Nov), but the lack of visits in June and around New Year's is odd. Because of poor default choice in sensitivity of the abundance bars the relative lack of i'iwi and 'apapane from late May-early August isn't very...

10/12/09 - Kaumana-Pu'u O'o Trail

On days when weather is terrible or unstable, or when I get up late, I try to do something new. Sort of a "scouting" mission, or small project. Although it's disappointing that I'm not on a big all-day expedition, I often do quite well on the discovery scorecard anyhow. Today was one of those frustrating yet rewarding half-days. It rained all day, and when I finally got up to the Saddle I seriously wondered if I was going to get out at all. However, the rain was fitting weather...

10/11/09 - Upper Waiakea Forest Reserve, South of Saddle Road 19 Mile Area

After a long Saturday I was pooped and slept in. There was also a very wet morning forecast, but of course it was completely dry and quite hot. It was going to be a short day out. After a lot of indecision I stopped at the lower end of Kaumana Trail, and decided I'd explore a new area in the big forest South of the trail. I spent a lot of time here early in the summer before moving on to other areas, so I also needed to collect some bird counts here for the autumn season. When I arrived one...

10/10/09 - TNC Kaiholena Preserve & Kipuka Puaulu, HVNP

Saturday was a volunteer day at The Nature Conservancy's Kaiholena Preserve in central Ka'u. We explored a small area of the preserve to find and remove weeds. This has usually been the volunteer day activity, so there were very few weeds except in some isolated mud pits. The koli'i population in the preserve is doing nicely, and I wonder if they're getting any more numerous in the fenced areas. In areas where they're doing well they pop up like...weeds! There were few birds - fewer than I...

10/8/09 - Pu'u Maka'ala NAR, Army Road

Scary thunderstorms rocked Hilo and the windward Saddle on Wednesday, so Thursday morning I was very conservative in my choice of outing. I slept in and eventually went to Army Road, where I haven't counted much in recent months. (Though I have been fairly active on the North side of Stainback Highway this year.) The weather was terribly muggy and overcast, but there were no storms and I was able to stay out until sunset. It was very quiet out there, with a constant trickle of a few birds, and...
