Swinhoe's Plover update 12-05-12

Posted Monday 14th May 2012 at 08:17 by BIJ
Dahu Beach, Haifeng, Guangdong.
Good numbers of Swinhoe's Plover now on the beach (152). I spotted 9 6-week old juvenile Kentish Plover from the wintering flock which arrived in breeding plumage last October. These birds apparently belong to an unknown ssp although they closely resemble Swinhoe's Plover, they are shorter in body and leg. Slimmer beaks often with thinnish black lores, less white on the forehad and duskier behind the eye. There were also 12 adults with the juveniles.Theses...

Swinhoe's Plover update

Posted Tuesday 8th May 2012 at 02:24 by BIJ
Dahu Beach, Haifeng, Guangdong 06-05-12.
Very interesting change on the beach. Most of the wintering breeding plumage Kentish Plover (unidentified sp.) had apparently moved on when the Swinhoe's Plover returned. There were still 8 juveniles which are now 5 weeks old with 12 adults. These birds will probably stay during the Summer and breed again as I noticed several birds of this unidentified Kentish Plover species amongst the Swinhoe's Plover last year. Unfortunately the very heavy rains...

Unusual presumed Long-tailed Shrike(Dusky) sp. fuscatus

Posted Thursday 16th February 2012 at 02:25 by BIJ
Lianwei, Haifeng, Guangdong, China.
I found a very unusual Shrike at the weekend which differed in many chacteristics from the norm for Lanius Schach sp.fuscatus.
Firstly the bird was overall black and not showing sharp contrast between the head, wing and body. Secondly the bird had a pale greenish beak rather than dark grey/black. Thirdly the bird had a strong wing bar showing white tips and edges to primaries at rest and finally a white underside to the upper tail and vent area....

Swinhoe's Plover update

Posted Tuesday 11th October 2011 at 06:29 by BIJ
I have been monitoring the Swinhoe's Plover numbers on both Dahu and Shangahizai beaches each W/E since my last posting. Last Saturday produced a real surprise with a group of about 40-50 passage birds which included around a dozen males in full breeding plumage. in early October ! I had originally decided these birds were not Swinhoe's Plover as they were so markedly different to the birds I have been used to seeing from late May onwards. However I sent photos to David Bakewell and Peter Kennerley...

Richard Carden was visiting Shenzhen and wanted to see White-eared Night Heron and Blyth's Kingfisher. He also hoped to find Silver Pheasant so I asked a friend of mine if we could travel up in his car to the resereve. Gaofeng Zhang kindly agreed and made all the arrangements at the hotel. It was to be my second visit to this wonderful reserve and Goafeng's fifth. We had very little time as Richard had to retrun to Singapore on the only flight Sunday evening at 1930.He was also unable to leave earlier...
