Unidentified woodpecker-like bird in North Carolina

I was on Fort Bragg the other day and I noticed a woodpecker-like bird fly up in a tree not far from me. I got what I thought was a pretty good look at it but from what I remembered I didn't see any woodpecker in my guide to match what I saw. Of course, it was in the shadows of the tree branches so I couldn't see much detail. The main things I noticed were the tiny, round, black head and white, diamond-shaped spots on the wings. The way it landed in the tree was similar to a woodpecker, landing...
