On December 22, 2012, the sun began setting later and later in the evening; and on January 6, 2013, the sun began rising earlier and earlier in the morning: meaning I’ll gradually start seeing my best friends more and more instead of less and less.

I’m referring to my first visitors in the morning and my last visitors in the evening. Cast to a predominance of relative gloom, ever since autumn—when time fell back—I’ve only had the chance to watch them eat dinner on Saturdays, Sundays,...

It's January!

How do I know it's January? After returning from the volunteers AGM at Brandon Marsh yesterday, where I had the briefest glimpse of my first Bittern of 2013, the wife had me out on the bikes later in the afternoon. Then, this morning I was cajoled into going swimming at 7.30am and to top it all, no bacon sarnie for breakfast. This is how I know!!

Disappearing inter-tidal flats.

They are disappearing at an alarming rate and this is especially true of the Asia where our belovèd and critically endangered Spoon-billed Sandpiper and other notable birds such as the endangered Nordmann's Greenshank pass a large part of their year along with millions of other birds of many species. These habitats are vital to their survival and must not be allowed to disappear.

Homework

Found myself out and about a few days ago. Family duties meant I couldn't do my normal patchwork. Instead, and spurned on again by my guilty conscience, I decided to complete my core survey square for the BTO's winter thrush survey. While the other areas I've been surveying were local, and my own choice, this core square was chosen for me. Caught up in the wave of enthusiasm, I heartily agreed to it, only latterly realising it was miles from anywhere.
