This blog is intended to follow my progress this year in my pursuit of obtaining some worthwhile bird photographs.
Very much a beginner, with limited funds but almost unlimited time, I want to capture photographs that are more than mere record shots. I am not expecting many rare or even unusual species, but want to do justice to any bird that cares to pose for me.
Wish me luck and good light.

Here we go again...

Posted Sunday 17th October 2010 at 15:21 by Denny Woodthorpe
Well, I'm back home again for the winter after closing down our "holiday home" - a static caravan at the side of a fishing lake.
I spent this morning cleaning the feeders and putting them up in the back garden.
Four hours have passed and apart from a robin and a great tit - no takers.
I realise that it will take some time for the birds to find the feeders, but I'm a bit worried about the goldfinches. I have kept the niger seed feeder going all summer and usually have...

Lousy Weather for Photography

Posted Thursday 4th February 2010 at 17:29 by Denny Woodthorpe
I was hoping to do some photography today, but the weather wasn't suitable. Mist and rain. I suppose I could have persevered, but I would not have been pleased by the results, so I went shopping instead.
I have not seen the coal tit again that I first saw the other day, but as I haven't been watching much today, he (or she) could have been around for ages without me knowing.
I'm still pleased with my photographic "technique" and I can't wait for the weather to improve. ...

Foolish Flash Fixation

Posted Friday 29th January 2010 at 18:08 by Denny Woodthorpe
Yesterday was something of a watershed for me. It all seems so easy and obvious now, but looking back, I can't believe how off track I have got myself lately.
I have struggled and struggled to make FP flash work so that I can get nice sharp photographs of garden birds. I have spent weeks experimenting with distances, settings and gadgets to get consistent results that do not look obvious flash photos. And to a large extent, I have been successful, but not quite successful enough. I have had...

Changing Moods

Posted Monday 25th January 2010 at 15:28 by Denny Woodthorpe
It's funny how my feelings towards my photography changes - even from day to day.
One day, everything seems wrong. I cannot take photos, my attempts at bird photography are rubbish and I'm just wasting my time.
The next day, I get just one decent image and then perhaps I'm not that bad after all.
I must admit, the comments on the Gallery encourage me to keep on trying. I now I have a long way to go before I can call myself a fully fledged bird photographer (nice pun), but I...

Rain

Posted Saturday 16th January 2010 at 13:22 by Denny Woodthorpe
The weather isn't very good again today for photography. Rain. Cold. Miserable. I'm having a day off.
It rained yesterday as well, but I did do a bit of photography.
I am pretty pleased with the "set-up" now. Exposure is always the problem (and not just the camera with the weather we've just had!).
I always seem to be getting a bit of under exposure. Nothing that can't be fixed in Photoshop, but a bit annoying. I think I must be operating at the limits of the flash....
